So OLC has a stock answer on using BaKoMa postscript fonts, which
makes for much better pdf file generation from latex output.
The 8.4 version of dvips is unhappy using these fonts; the error is

Using the dvips in newtex doesn't create this problem.
(The same sort of error occurs in other postscript font-using
situations, but this is probably the most common)
