utmp problems under solaris?

I was logged into cvp and noticed some weird behavior out of w and
who. The first weirdness I saw was a duplicate entry for a user:
eternity pts/24 Aug 9 15:07 (ccr-051)

Nathan pointed out and I later noticed logged in users not appearing
in w/who output, but still being seen by finger.

/usr/ucb/finger
ops: this afects the gunner, at least, so we may want to resolve it
before upgrading all of the dialups to 8.4
