I've seen a machine in this state also (coincidentally, it was
hudson.mit.edu, but no relation). This is presumably the same problem
as /etc/hostname.hme0 being zero-length, and can be fixed in the next
full release with judicious application of syncupdate, or alleviated
in a patch release by using sync. I'll submit the patch for the
mainline.
