Hi, Tom. I'm afraid you haven't captured the core of the complaints.
Since the athena.mit.edu MX switch, we have seen the following three
problems:
* When an Athena workstation sends a bounce message, the
bounce gets lost because of the null envelope from. We will
be working around this problem in Tuesday's patch release by
making sendmail send bounces with a mailer-daemon envelope
from.
* If the user of a private Athena workstation forwards their
mail (e.g. if I made "ghudson@small-gods.mit.edu" forward to
"ghudson@hotmail.com"), when it tries to forward mail from
off-site, the envelope from will be a non-mit.edu address
and outgoing will reject the mail.
* If someone sends mail from a "local account" (like "root")
from an Athena workstation, the envelope from is set to
username@machinename instead of username@mit.edu. If the
Athena machine is not a mit.edu machine, such mail will be
rejected by outgoing.
While the first problem is under control for now, the second and third
problems are more fundamental. And we're not talking about "mailers
running non-mit.edu domains." We hope you will have some advice for
dealing with this change in conditions.
Thanks for your time.
