sgi netscape 4.61 and https not working properly

i'm running athena 8.3.13 on an sgi indy. as soon as i started to use the
new netscape (4.61) yestrday to connect via https to a couple of the
webservers i run (search and lava-lamp), i noticed that i cannot get
an https connection to search...i'm just sending in this observation, and
will send more info if i can better narrow down the problem.
the symptom:
on sgi with netscape 4.61, going to https://search.mit.edu:443/ causes a
"No User Certificate" window to pop up. but, i _do_ have a certificate.
getting a new one, i see the same thing.
using netscape 3.x (invoked from the dash menu), getting a new certificate,
and going to https://search.mit.edu:443/ does the correct thing.
