jhawk and jonathon are right -- if I do su -, my prompt is megara# and 
passwd "does the right thing".

The private workstation owners guide says to log in as root, so I suppose 
most people wouldn't stumble into this one.

I see that Greg has already put a patch in to make passwd print out who it 
is operating for (since the local program on SGI doesn't tell you).
