8.3 issues with my sparc5 (mail and hostinfo and su -root)

I canot send a email from my sparc station 5 (b52.mit.edu) which just took
8.3.8.
athena% cat /etc/motd

I also had a problem with hostinfo not being able to resolve an IP address
at AI until I pinged the hostname. Not sure if this is related to 8.3, but
a SGI running 8.2.19 was able to resolve the hostname from IP just fine.

I used to use "su -root" to gain root access to my machine, now when I try
that it asks for the password and says sorry. If I use just "su" it takes
the password just fine and I get access fine.
