System name:		megara.mit.edu
Type and version:	IP22 8.3.10 (with mkserv)
Display type:		GR3-XZ

Shell:			/bin/athena/tcsh
Window manager:		unknown

What were you trying to do?

Change root password.

in changing root passwd, I logged in as myself, su'ed, then ran
passwd.

it didn't change the root password, it changed mine. didn't say who
it was changing, which made it confusing.

"passwd root" does the right thing.

athena% su
Password:
athena% passwd
Running local password-changing program.
New password:
Re-enter new password:
Updating /etc/shadow.local with new passwd entry.
athena% where passwd
/usr/athena/bin/passwd
/usr/bin/passwd
/bin/passwd
athena% grep root /srvd/etc/shadow /etc/shadow
/srvd/etc/shadow:root:SSpbaftOt8rE6:10697::::::
/etc/shadow:root:SSpbaftOt8rE6:10764::::::
athena% grep root /srvd/etc/shadow /etc/shadow.local
/srvd/etc/shadow:root:SSpbaftOt8rE6:10697::::::
/etc/shadow.local:root:SSpbaftOt8rE6:10764::::::

but when Mark did it on his 8.3 Ultra, it did tell him who it was
changing the password for (afterwards...)

Is there a difference between the SGI and SUN passwd?

What's wrong:

I think the SGI version should also tell you who it is changing the
password for.

What should have happened:

See above.
