I alerted Alex Prengel about this problem this morning and he
was able to get get frame working again. The problem turns out to have
been that there was no /mit/frame/arch/sun4x_56 symlink, so frame
refused to function. Alex added the link and things seem to be working
fine now.
As a side note, it seems that some of the third party software
that is started using wrapper scripts (I've tested Frame, Applix, and
Matlab) seems to be losing in this way, regardless of what
ATHENA_SYS_COMPAT is set to. I haven't been able to track down the
source of this problem yet though.
