a cluster user experienced some problem with an 8.1 sun in w20 (the
keyboard seemed to not respond, and X seemed to believe that the
control key was permanently held down), and asked me for help. He
didn't have any unsaved work, so after a short investigation, I had
him log out and back in.
When he logged back in, he observed the problem that you noted. I
tried several things (including xterm -e {/bin/sh,moira}) and found
that although I could get a shell in emacs, I couldn't get an xterm to
stay on the screen. The user had logged in at another computer while
I was looking, and didn't seem interested in staying logged in twice
while I investigated, so I didn't follow it up from there.
Of course, feel free to ask questions is there's something I omitted.
