But many of the other people who send to these lists are writing mail
from their labs or on dialup from Whitehead or whatever. I don't
suppose those problems are from SGI's either?

That seems unlikely, since all of the dialup machines are DECstations,
not SGIs. There are some other known cases in which mail gets slowed
down, even if it is sent from an athena workstation to someone at
mit.

1) the process that sends the mail from the workstation to the central
mailhub crashes for some reason, before getting the mail off, and
leaves the mail "locked". In this case the mail will be delivered
shortly after the next time that workstation reboots.

2) the mailhubs (or post offices) are hosed. This happens
periodically, and is most often caused by somone spamming someone else
through the MIT mailhubs (even if both the spammer and spammee are not
at MIT.) This can cause mail to be delayed for hours, but not usually
for more than a day.
