I mostly send mail from SGI's so that explains my problems.
But many of the other people who send to these lists are writing mail
from their labs or on dialup from Whitehead or whatever. I don't
suppose those problems are from SGI's either?

This is almost undoubetedly due to a bug on the SGI's. A fix has been
developed for this and has been in testing. Tonight a patch release
went out for the SGIs that should correct this and other problems. I
do not believe it had anything to do with any specific mailing list,
or user.
