GNOME is a pig. I just clocked it on a random cluster sparc 5
(m56-129-8) and gu takes nearly 90 seconds to log in. An uncustomized
athena user takes 10-15 seconds.
I think that we could fairly easily get it down to under a minute.
Currently gu tries to start sawmill twice for some reason, and sits
there complaining for like 30 seconds.
What is our target? Obviously "as fast as possible," but we should
really come up with an idea of how fast we *have* to get? My guess for
a reasonable target is under 45 seconds. Thoughts?

PS: I measured time till I could usefully click on the Gnome menu on
the gnome login, and time til I could type something at the athena%
prompt for the default login. I tested the default login by selecting
"Ignore my customizations" for gu.
