This was mentioned at Release Team today.
We need to put this into Athena 10, at least for clusters.

Subject: Athena 10 will require an Ubuntu work-around on our 745s.

Alex Prengel showed me how the 745 he is testing with hangs instead
of reboots
when he tried to do Athena 10 with it. This is apparently a known bug:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/
115011
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/
115906
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/
114854

The root cause is apparently some systems don't allow the new-fangled
reboot
method used by default in Ubuntu see:
http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/6/5/59

The work-around is sometimes:

add "reboot=b" to the kernel command line in grub.
and other times
remove the -i flag from the /etc/init.d/reboot and /etc/init.d/halt
scripts
