Attendees at the Birds-of-a-Feather session agreed to
reinstate the Working Group on par with other DCE-SIG
working groups. Cathy Dwyer stepped down as chair and
I would like to take the opportunity to express our
thanks to her for her efforts in moving this key DCE
application area forward as DCE infrastructure falls
into place.
Merrill Holt of Oracle outlined his company's plans
for DCE. In view of the fact that X/Open has published
a Call Level Interface, Oracle sees no reason to open
the Database Server interface. Merrill also mentioned
that SQL*Net/DCE is available on RS/6000 and the primary
customer interest in SQL*Net/DCE is because of DCE
Security. Merrill also mentioned that Oracle 7.2
supports authenticated RPCs. On the subject of thread-
safe client libraries, which are essential for multi-
threaded DCE middleware, Oracle will not have this
feature in Oracle 7.2. Application developers would
need to run a single process per connection or provide
thread wrappers on the libraries.
Ralph Slout described Information Builders' plans
for their EDA/SQL product. Client to EDA Gateway
tier will be available over DCE in stages of
increasing functionality beginning in early 1995.
DCE for the EDA Gateway to Mainframe tier will
depend on availability and functionality of IBM's
MVS/DCE releases.
Cathy Dwyer and Tim Hahn fielded user questions on
the availability of DCE for MVS, with special reference
to access to IMS and DB2/MVS databases. A gateway
product for DCE connection to MVS will be available
at year end. Several attendees voiced the need for
a direct RPC-based connection. Others wanted to
know how the DCE Security Server and RACF would
interoperate. There was clear need defined for
access to mainframe-based databases from PC-based
clients over DCE.
Since the Database "working" group was more a user
group with special interest in databases, it was
recommended that other working group chairs should
advise the group on developments in their areas as
they relate to databases (e.g. security, porting, etc.)
Also the group would be very interested in hearing
success stories in impelenting database connectivity
over DCE.
Best regards,
Dipak Basu - Chair
