CUSTOMER SERVICE SUPPORTS OSF DCE 1.1 LAUNCH
********************************************************
The Open Software Foundation last month announced new
pricing and promotional offers for its Distributed
Computing Environment (DCE) Release 1.1. The new pricing
is in response to the growing demand from vendors and
end users for the greater availability of DCE on the
desktop.
"With DCE 1.0 gaining widespread adoption, and DCE 1.1
shipping later this year, we think the time is right to
reduce Executive (client) prices significantly and offer
special incentives for upgrades," said Joe Maloney, DCE
Business Area Manager. "We expect this pricing to have a
major impact, especially in the desktop market."
The following summarizes the changes between DCE 1.0
pricing and DCE 1.1 pricing:
- Executive Object fees have been reduced
from $75 and $25 (based on volume) to $2.00
regardless of volume.
- The price for an annual paid up license of the
Executive has been reduced from $500,000
per year, per operating system, to $100,000, per
year, per operating system.
- The Administrative Tool Package has been reduced
from $75 to $2.00 on a per copy basis or. When it
is bundled with the Executive, the price remains
the same, i.e., 20% of the net Executive fee.
- First time purchase of a DCE 1.1 source license
with full distribution rights will remain at
$250,000, as with DCE 1.0.
- The upgrade fee from a full distribution DCE 1.0
license to a full distribution DCE 1.1 license is
$100,000. Full support customers will receive a
$35,000 discount on this upgrade, making their
effective cost $65,000.
- All other DCE pricing, including server pricing,
remains unchanged.
In addition to the new pricing structure, OSF will be
offering two special promotions to accelerate adoption
of DCE 1.1:
1) Customers upgrading from a DCE 1.0 full
distribution license to a DCE 1.1 full distribution
license before October 1,1994 may report subsequent
binary fees at the new 1.1 rates.
2) New customers who buy a DCE 1.0 full
distribution license before October 1, 1994 with a
full support agreement will receive a DCE 1.1 full
distribution license for free.
"This announcement will serve as an opportunity for
further adoption of this important enabling
technology," said Bill Estrem, Project Leader for the
Information Architecture Group at 3M. "In addition, it
will make it even easier for vendors to make DCE
available to users at a reasonable price."
"The new pricing structure shows that OSF and its
sponsor companies are going for mass deployment of DCE
across all platforms, from personal computers to
massively parallel super computers," said Mike Guidry,
Project Leader for Architecture at Phillips Petroleum
Company.

TWO-DAY DME NMO 1.0 WORKSHOP
Introduction
The Network Management Option (NMO), the second
component of the Open Software Foundation's Distributed
Management Environment (DME), is designed to meet the
need for a general-purpose network management solution
in mixed-vendor environments. NMO provides support for:
- Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) network
management.
- Common Management Interface Protocol (CMIP) network
management.
- A common management protocol API (XMP) for access to
the network management protocols.
- A complete set of development tools for the
definition, modeling, and management of network
resources, along with an object management API (XOM).
- A common platform for management application
development.
- A common platform for access to network management
protocols.
End users in the telecom and other industries are
interested in using the NMO as the basis for application
systems that will manage Network Elements (NEs) using
the CMIP or SNMP protocols. Consequently, there is
a need for education and training for management and
staff members who will be involved in managing,
designing, and developing these systems.
Workshop Goals and Objectives
The proposed two-day workshop is a combination of
lecture, demonstration, and lab. Upon completion,
participants will be able to:
- Understand and explain the NMO, its architecture,
component parts, operation, benefits, and relationship
to standards.
- Understand the issues related to NMO availability on
third-part systems and hosting NMO on new platforms.
- Develop and manage the definitions of managed objects,
with an emphasis on NE objects similar to those
encountered in practice.
- Design and develop applications to manage the defined
objects using the NMO APIs.
- Understand the guidelines for portable and
interoperable multivendor applications and apply these
guidelines to application design and development.
- Understand the performance and scaling characteristics
of NMO applications and apply this knowledge to design
and development projects.
- Assess whether NMO is appropriate as a platform for
customer applications.
As this is a hands-on workshop, it is designed for
approximately 10 participants who will actually perform
the development exercises. However, any number of
additional participants may benefit from attending
selected lecture portions of the workshop.

LOCALIZATION NEWS
********************************************************
**********
The L10N Program for the translation of DCE 1.1 message
catalogs and documentation into Japanese has received
the support necessary to proceed. Details of the
program can be obtained by contacting Jim Curtin in the
OSF Tokyo office.
NEW! L10N program for German, French, and Italian
OSF is initiating an amended DCE 1.1 localization (L10N)
development program. The program, which coincides with
the internationalized DCE 1.1 source code, will
translate DCE 1.1 message catalogs, the DCE 1.1 Problem
Guide, and the DCE 1.1 Glossary of Terms into three
languages. The program goal is to provide a core set of
translated materials that will help position DCE
strategically in international markets. The reduced
scope of the program lowers the cost of the program, but
provides the material necessary for successful DCE
implementation and consistent subsequent translation.
The new program guidelines were drawn after contacting
the companies receiving the first program proposal. The
overall goal of providing consistent, high quality, and
timely translated materials to DCE 1.1 source code
licensees at a fraction of the aggregate development
cost remains unchanged.
Before we can begin the development process, we need to
assess your company's interest in the program and secure
financial support for the development. Minimum
participation in the program will be required
before the program proceeds. A formal program proposal
soliciting participation will be distributed in the near
future. Participation in the program is expected to
cost approximately US$69,500 for the three-
language package. Contact John Raleigh at OSF
Educational Services for further information.

Second Release of the DCE Release 1.1 Beta Source Code -
Available Now
We are pleased to announce that the second release of
the beta source code for the upcoming Distributed
Computing Environment (DCE), Release 1.1, is available
electronically via the Andrew File System (AFS).
This release was created from the DCE source and made
available during the second week of August. It contains
numerous bug fixes, as well as more complete versions of
the DCE subcomponents, including DCED and DCECP. This
version of the beta release contains DFS fully
integrated into OSF DCE 1.1, as well.
The objective of the Source Code Beta Test Program is to
offer OSF DCE licensees early access to the DCE 1.1
code. This allows beta program participants an early
beginning to their productization efforts for the next
version of DCE, expediting rapid availability of
products to the marketplace. Participation in the beta
program is open to all licensees of the current version
of DCE, Release 1.0, who are also DCE Full Support
customers.
A further benefit of the beta program comes from the
opportunity for OSF and the licensees to work together
to review and improve the quality of the release before
final shipment. Each participant made a commitment to
active involvement in achieving the objectives of
the program.
The DCE Source Code Beta Test Program started 24 June
and continues until 31 August 1994. Final shipment of
DCE Release 1.1 is scheduled for the end of 1994. There
are no special fees required to participate in the beta
program except those necessary to meet the requirements
of being a DCE 1.0 licensee with a Full Support
contract.
If you have any questions, please send mail to support-
admin@osf.org or call OSF Software Support at +1 617 621

OSF DCE Electronic VTS Support
The OSF Validation Test Suite (VTS) Release 1.0.1 of the
OSF Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) is available
electronically, via AFS, to VTS 1.0 licensees.
The DCE RPC VTS consists of tests that allow you to
verify your DCE implementation for compliance with the
relevant description in revision A of the Application
Environment Specification/Distributed Computing
(AES/DC), RPC Volume. This portion of the AES/DC
describes the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) component of
DCE. Because the DCE RPC VTS relies on the definitions
in the AES/DC, OSF recommends that you refer to this
document when analyzing the test results.
The VTS 1.0.1 source code is in the following location:
/afs/syseng.osf.org/dce-archive/dcevts-1.0.1
Access to this directory is restricted to VTS 1.0 source
licensees only.
For information on becoming a VTS licensee, contact OSF
Direct at (617)621-7300 or direct@osf.org.

DME NMO 1.0 Documentation now Available
The DME Network Management Option Release 1.0
documentation manual is currently available from OSF
and OSF only at a cost of $30. The book is being sold as
a stand-alone from the three-volume DME 1.0
doccumentation set. For that reason, there is a
separate shipping/handling charge of $10 for it.
However, that fee is waived when all four books are
included in the same purchase and the usual $20 s/h
charge is applied.
