OSF Makes DCE Affordable for All --
Capitalizing on the growing momentum of DCE, pricing has
been significantly reduced to encourage pervasive
industry adoption
CAMBRIDGE, MA July 26, 1994 Q The Open Software
Foundation today announced new pricing and promotional
offers for their Distributed Computing Environment (DCE)
Release 1.1. The new pricing is in response to the
growing need from desktop vendors and end users who are
demanding greater availability of DCE on the desktop.
"With DCE 1.0 gaining widespread adoption, and DCE 1.1
shipping later this year, we think the time is right to
significantly reduce client prices and offer special
incentives for upgrades," said Joe Maloney, DCE Business
Area Manager. "We expect this pricing to have a major
impact, especially in the desktop market."
The following summarizes the changes between DCE 1.0
pricing and DCE 1.1 pricing:
- Client (Executive) Object fees have been reduced
from $75 and $25 (based on volume) to $2.00
regardless of volume.
- The price for an annual paid up license of the
Client (Executive) has been reduced from $500,000
per year, per operating system, to $100,000, per
year, per operating system.
- The Administrative Tool Package has been reduced
from $75 to $2.00 on a per copy basis or
alternatively, when bundled with the client, 20% of
the net client fee.
- First time purchase of a DCE 1.1 source license
with full distribution rights will remain at
$250,000 as in DCE 1.0.
- The upgrade fee from a full distribution DCE 1.0
license to a full distribution DCE 1.1 license is
$100,000. Full support customers will receive a
$35,000 discount on this upgrade, making their
effective cost $65,000.
- All other DCE pricing, including server pricing,
remains unchanged.
In addition to the new pricing structure, OSF will be
offering two special promotions to accelerate adoption
of DCE 1.1:
1) Customers upgrading from a DCE 1.0 full
distribution license to a DCE 1.1 full distribution
license before October 1, 1994 may report
subsequent binary fees at the new 1.1 rates.
2) New customers who buy a DCE 1.0 full distribution
license before October 1, 1994 with a full support
agreement will receive a DCE 1.1 full distribution
license for free.
"This announcement will serve as an opportunity for
further adoption of this important enabling
technology.," said Bill Estrem, Project Leader for the
Information Architecture Group at 3M. "In addition, it
will make it even easier for vendors to make DCE
available to users at a reasonable price."
"The new pricing structure shows that OSF and its
sponsor companies are going for mass deployment of DCE
across all platforms, from personal computers to
massively parallel super computers," said Mike Guidry,
Project Leader for Architecture at Phillips Petroleum
Company.

OSF Announces New Allied Sponsorship Level --
Multi-tiered levels ensure broader industry
participation
CAMBRIDGE, MA August 3, 1994 Q The Open Software
Foundation today announced a new Allied Sponsorship
level designed to provide Associate Sponsors a greater
level of participation within OSF. At the recent OSF
Board of Directors meeting, five existing Associate
Sponsors, NEC Corporation, Siemens Nixdorf Information
Systems, Silicon Graphics Inc., Sony Corporation, and
Transarc Corporation, announced they have grouped
together to form an Allied Sponsor class and have
elected a representative of Siemens Nixdorf to
represent them on the OSF Board.
"The desire of these sponsors to participate in the OSF
process at the board level is further demonstration of
their commitment to the goals and mission of OSF and to
the technologies it produces," said David Tory,
President and CEO of OSF. "This is also a model to other
interested organizations of a way to cost-effectively
participate with OSF and its other sponsor organizations
to accelerate the delivery of open systems technology
and to further the goals of the open systems industry."
OSF's new membership structure now provides three levels
of sponsorship: Executive Sponsors, Associate Sponsors,
and the new Allied Sponsors. Executive Sponsors pay a $1
million per year sponsor fee and automatically receive a
seat on the OSF Board of Directors. Associate Sponsors
pay a $200,000 a year sponsor fee but do not
automatically receive a board seat. The new Allied
Sponsor level allows a number of Associate Sponsors to
group together and pool their individual sponsor fees to
reach the $1 million level. At that time the group may
appoint a representative from the group to participate
at the board level. This provides Associate Sponsors an
increased opportunity to participate in board activities
while retaining their lower funding requirement.
All other OSF membership structures remain unchanged.
Other membership fees range from $5,000 to $25,000 per
year depending on the size and nature of the
organization.
"The major purpose behind the recent restructuring of
OSF was to provide a streamlining of development
processes and to afford a wider participation of the
industry at the sponsor level, said Tory. "This new
sponsorship structure enhances that opportunity."

OSF/1 AD Watchers . . .
Members interested in operating systems for scalable
high performance computing will want to keep their eyes
on the latest developments in the OSF Research
Institute's OSF/1 AD program. OSF/1 AD 2.0 begins
preliminary testing next month. An advance prototype is
due out by the end of this year.
This system will significantly improve the operating
system performance characteristics and distribution of
services for scalable parallel systems. This technology
will also be an initial step towards support for
workstation clustering.
Several companies have used OSF RI prototypes to
accelerate their product schedules. Both Intel and
Convex produced commercial products from the first OSF/1
AD prototype. Each now ships products based on OSF/1
AD.

OSF Research Institute's MK6 Project
Microkernel based systems have generated considerable
industry interest over the past few years. Microkernels
have many very desirable characteristics including,
improved software engineering qualities, support of
multiple personalities, user mode OS servers, and
reduced complexity. However, to date microkernel based
systems have not achieved the same level of performance
generally found in more traditional integrated operating
systems.
The MK6 Project evolves OSF/1 MK (Microkernel). The OSF
Research Institute's MK6 project goal is to demonstrate
that microkernel based systems can achieve performance
levels close to or equivalent to integrated operating
systems.
In April, the RI in collaboration with the University of
Utah, demonstrated that its microkernel based system
(MK6) could achieve better than 95 percent of the
performance of an integrated kernel. In July, the RI
closed the gap to 98 percent on a number of industry
standard benchmarks. In some cases, MK6 performance
actually exceeds integrated kernel performance.
The RI is now comparing MK6 performance results against
a variety of other commercial Unix systems and early
results continue to be very encouraging. Microkernel
based system can be truly competitive on the performance
front.
This technology will be available in late September in
snapshot form to OSF/1 1.3 licensees. For additional
information contact mk6-request@osf.org.
AT&T is Now an OSF Research Institute Program Sponsor
Separate from its corporate sponsorship in OSF, AT&T GIS
has joined, Digital Equipment Corporation, Hewlett-
Packard, Hitachi, and IBM in funding specific research
programs in OSF's Research Institute.
OSF's Research Institute is chartered to deliver
innovative and economical solutions to difficult system
technology requirements. Shared funding provides
program sponsors an economical vehicle for investment in
research of specific interest to them.
New ANDF Contract
The OSF Research Institute has been awarded a contract
from DRA to validate the TenDRA (ANDF Technology)
capability to implement a UNIX-like Operating System.
The initial task is to use the TenDRA technology to do a
complete build of the same operating system on two
different platforms. The second task is to determine
how to utilize the portability features of the TenDRA
technology to create an ANDF version of the software
which could be installed on a wider range of target
platforms. The contract is scheduled to run for 17
months.
ANDF Research Kit
The ANDF Research Kit which was described in the June
News Nuggets is now ready for distribution. The newly
implemented GANDF technology (ANDF installers based on
GNU C code generators, now fully compliant with the GNU
public license) has now passed the acceptance tests on
three platforms: HP-PA, RS-6000, and Alpha.
A freely distributable subset of the ANDF Kit (Driver,
Linker, and GANDF installers) will also be available via
anonymous FTP. No DRA licensed code will be included in
this subset. The purpose of the subset is to allow
users to experiment with installing applications
distributed in ANDF, such as Mosaic, which will also be
available via anonymous FTP. Other applications
may be posted from time to time.
To receive the kit, an ANDF Cooperative Research
Agreement must be signed. Contact andyj@osf.org to
receive a copy.

DCE in the News
In a Computerworld article, dated August 8, 1994 it
stated that:
"Open Environment Corp. (OEC) in Cambridge, Mass., will
this week announce a new tool set for developing DCE
applications. The tools support a range of programming
languages, including C, C++ and Cobol for server
development."
In the same article, John Shade, manager of distributed
computing at United HealthCare Corp., a managed health
care organization in Minneapolis was quoted as saying,
"We consider [DCE] a necessity.
The Computerworld article also quoted Rich Frobose,
group leader for distributed computing at Lawrence
Livermore Laboratory in Livermore, Calif. "Being able to
build services on top of DCE, which works in a
heterogeneous environment, means we can bring in
almost any vendor's machine and bring up our service in
that environment. It minimizes our
support costs."
Other Recent DCE Quotes
"Key to Open Blueprint [IBM's enterprise-wide
distributed computing strategy] is the Distributed
Computing Environment from OSF," according to Peter
Tarrant, IBM's client/server marketing director.
"IBM's LAN Systems Development Division and Distributed
Software Products Division are making DCE available
across IBM's multiple operating systems, including OS/2,
AIX, OS/400 and MVS. DCE addresses three main customer
concerns, said Tarrant:interoperability, the ability to
use a global directory, and the ability to use a single
logon to navigate through the network."
- RS/Magazine, August 1994
"DCE -- From De Jure to De Facto
DCE has been ported to almost all Unix operating
systems, as well as to OS/2 and Windows. . . The fact
that Type A (leading-edge) companies are using DCE at
run time for mission-critical applications is a strong
indication that the DCE framework has been market-tested
for everyday use."
- Gartner Group Research Notes, July 25, 1994
"The Open Software Foundation slashed licensing fees for
its Distributed Computing Environment software last
week . . . DCE vendors will now be able to license DCE
client software for unlimited use at a fraction of the
previous cost.
Users and analysts were upbeat about the impact of the
price cuts. 'This is a smart move,' said Tony Carrato, a
representative of DEC Users Society.
"People need ubiquity for security and naming services
and this pricing could encourage desktop vendors to
include DCE [in their operating systems],' said John
Manning, a senior analyst at Yankee Group, a Boston-
based market researcher."

identify the appropriate contacts in your companies
who may be available for input and review of important
elements of this CDE/Motif project as it is formulated.
It is important to this new process that individuals
within the OSF Membership are identified who can
represent your views from a user and/or developer
perspective in the desktop and user interface toolkit
areas. We plan to begin a series of interactive
discussions on a variety of topics that will help the
project sponsors, the project prime contractor, and OSF
plan the new releases of these important technologies.
We will be including the User Environment Component
(UEC) SIG contacts in these discussions, but we would
also like to expand beyond the SIG to offer as many OSF
members as possible the opportunity to actively
participate in this process.
Please email your contacts to Lorraine Burrage at
burrage@osf.org or fax them to her at:617-621-0584 as
soon as possible. Please include the following: name,
title, member company, surface mail address, email
address, phone and fax. Also, could you please indicate
areas of interest pertaining to: desktop, technical,
business, user interface toolkit and user/human factors.

OSF has Major Presence at First Annual Interop Tokyo
Networld + Interop 94 Tokyo was held on July 27-29,
1994. This was the first Interop show to be held in
Tokyo. Roughly, 50,000 people visited the show and 1800
people attended the many conference sessions. Lance
Travis of OSF presented DME as part of a DCE session
hosted by SECOM Information Systems. Alfred Specter,
President of Transarc, presented on commercial
experiences with DCE and Encina. In a separate session
on transaction processing, OSF Pacific Operations
Managing Director, James Curtin, gave a talk on DCE's
role in Distributed OLTP.
OSF had its own booth on the show floor entitled DCE
Showcase. There were three demonstrations; seven
companies presented the DCE DDP demo - these were IBM,
DEC, YHP, Hitachi, NEC, Fujitsu, and Sony. The second
demonstration was an Encina OLTP demo. This was shown by
6 companies; IBM, YHP, Hitachi, NEC, Mitsubishi
Electric, and Mitsui/Nihon Sun Microsystems. The third
demo was OEC Japan showing their OEC toolkit. 1500
people attended the repeating 20 minute presentations
that were showing at the OSF booth to describe what DCE
is and how each of the demonstrations worked. The entire
booth exhibit was managed by OSF Pacific Operations and
jointly funded by the exhibitors.
