OSF Electronic Bulletin
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
A monthly electronic mail news update for OSF Members
from the Open Software Foundation.
Vol 5, Issue 11. December, 1994
<><><><><><><><><>
Executive Summary
<><><><><><><><><>
* As 1994 draws to a close, OSF has completed the
restructuring and transition to a new business and
technology development model. The other major notice is
that OSF delivered all technologies against committed
schedules in 1994, even as the corporate transition was
in progress. And OSF now boasts fifteen committed
sponsors for open systems technology development and
deployment, in 1995 and beyond.
* The next End User Forum event will take place during
UniForum in Dallas (the week of March 13, 1995). OSF's
End User Forum is planning to coordinate joint activity
with the X/Open User Council at UniForum. Stay tuned
for more details.
* The majority of the DCE 1.0.x licensee base has
already upgraded and received the DCE 1.1 source code.
Participation in the Beta program has helped vendors
accelerate the development cycle for products based on
DCE 1.1. As a result, users will start seeing DCE 1.1
functionality released in vendor products in mid-1995.
"Large corporations are interested in DCE because it is
the only tool available that offers a consistent suite
of services that run on a variety of computers."
- David Chappell, Chappell & Associates, InfoWorld,
November 20, 1994
* Motif entered 1994 celebrating its Fifth birthday and
on the heels of becoming an IEEE standard. The Motif
specification was subsequently submitted to X/Open's
Fast Track process and is now being published as part of
X/Open's CAE. One independent industry study done by
the X Business Group cited over 2.5 million Motif users
exist with that number continuing to grow dynamically.
Motif has certainly captured the imagination of the Open
Systems community and delivered upon the promise of
providing a standard, consistent graphical user
interface across all major workstation platforms.
* Strong interest already seen for OSF's Web-related
workshops and conferences scheduled for 1995. Please
refer to the OSF Research Institute Advanced Development
Section for more details.
* The OSF 1995 Member Meeting has been scheduled for
Wednesday, May 31 through Friday, June 2 at the Westin
Hotel, Copley Place in Boston.
* 1995 DCE Developer's Conferences scheduled for April
11-13 in San Jose at the Red Lion Hotel and on August
21-23 at the Westin Hotel in Boston.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
OSF End User Forum Update
The last update shared information about end user
concerns regarding the Object Management Group's Common
Object Request Broker Architecture interoperability
efforts (CORBA 2.0). The OMG board approved the
proposal that features the DCE RPC subset as optional.
More critical for many, however, is ensuring that CORBA
will fit in with the directory and security
infrastructures many organizations are now establishing.
End users who'd like CORBA to be compatible with the DCE
security and directory services should pay close
attention to the OMG deliberations over the coming
weeks. Updates will be accessible through the
enduser@osf.org mailing list.
The next End User Forum event will take place during
UniForum in Dallas (the week of March 13, 1995). We are
planning to coordinate joint activity with the X/Open
User Council at UniForum. Stay tuned for more details.
For further information about the OSF End User Forum,
contact Ted Hanss, Chair, End User Steering Committee
(ted@umich.edu or +1 313 763-6185) or Jane Smeloff, OSF
Membership Services (jane@osf.org or 617-621-8997). To
join the OSF end user email list, contact enduser-

DCE Release 1.1 Ships
November marked the completion of the OSF DCE 1.1 development
cycle. The majority of the DCE 1.0.x licensee base has
already upgraded and received the DCE 1.1 source code.
Participation in the Beta program has helped vendors
accelerate the development cycle for products based on DCE
1.1. As a result, users will start seeing DCE 1.1
functionality released in vendor products in mid-1995.
In addition to system vendors and application developers, end
user organizations are seeing the value of licensing DCE
source code and complete documentation set for their internal
education and development. OSF also provides a full set of
support and consulting services for DCE professionals at all
levels.
To obtain a copy of the DCE 1.1 licensing kit and to learn
more about DCE support and consulting services, please
contact OSF Direct Channels at 617-621-7300 or email
direct@osf.org.
Congratulations to all who made this release a success and
best wishes for a continuing success for DCE in 1995!!
DCE in the News
"Large corporations are interested in DCE because it is
the only tool available that offers a consistent suite
of services that run on a variety of computers."
- David Chappell, Chappell & Associates, InfoWorld,
November 20, 1994
"Bellcore is also experiencing the benefits of DCE. The
regional Bell holding company affiliate is able to
provide a common set of network services across the
RBHC's vast mix of computing platforms and operating
systems."
- Charles Blouner, Bellcore, Network World,
November 7, 1994
"The portrayal of message-oriented middleware (MOM) and
remote procedure calls (RPCs) as rival technologies has
become old news. . . RPC technology can be used to
provide security, data conversion, directory
services, and other functions that many MOM-based
products currently do not offer. . . [Peerlogic] is in
the midst of a multiphase effort to support the Open
Software Foundation's DCE (based on RPC technology)
on the Pipes platform."
- Rick Whiting, Client/Server Today, November 1994
"The new distributed system [for the National Center for
Atmospheric Research interface to massive data stores]
is based on the OSF DCE. 'We're looking at DCE as a

OSF/Motif Highlights - User Environment Technology
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
OSF/Motif in Review
As we enter the holiday season and prepare for a new
year, it's worth a moment to pause and reflect upon the
past year's accomplishment. Motif entered 1994
celebrating its Fifth birthday and on the heels of
becoming an IEEE standard. The Motif specification was
subsequently submitted to X/Open's Fast Track process
and is now being published as part of X/Open's
Common Application Environment (CAE).
Not only is Motif an industry specification standard,
it's also a standard in the workstation market. In
June, OSF/Motif 2.0 was announced at the Xhibition
tradeshow to a standing room only audience. OSF/Motif
2.0 is one of the most feature-rich releases of this
technology since its introduction. OSF hosted a
hospitality suite the first day of the tradeshow and
hundreds of licensees and interested professionals
dropped by to see live demos of Motif 2.0.
Motif was the featured cover story in the July edition
of X Journal. General Availability occurred on schedule
in early August and within 90 days, OSF had received
orders for more than 150 copies. OSF/Motif annual
shipments continue to grow and in 1994, licensees
reported shipments 25% higher than anticipated. One
independent industry study done by the X Business GroupJ
cited 2.5 million Motif users with continual growth
increasing that number dynamically. Motif has certainly
captured the imagination of the Open Systems community
and delivered upon the promise of providing a standard,
consistent graphical user interface across all major
workstation platforms. We're now seeing good growth in
the PC X Server and X Terminal platforms with healthy
interest also embedded systems suppliers.
In January, the OSF/Motif development team launched the
Motif 2.0 beta program with many OSF member
participants helping to ensure the highest quality
release. In March, this beta program was expanded to
include the Validation Test Suite (VTS). In the space
of a few short months, the OSF/Motif development team
delivered the second and third snapshots of Motif 2.0
software and the final GA version in August, as planned.
Let's also not forget to mention the VTS/QATS test
suites and a host of demo programs. A significant,
quality effort by OSF's outstanding Motif engineers!
OSF/Motif 2.0 - The Extensibility Release
OSF/Motif 2.0 is a major functional release that
incorporates many improvements over Release 1.2. The 2.0
user environment offers a more powerful base on which to
create sophisticated applications for worldwide markets.
The Motif 2.0 release includes:
- New extensibility features that make building widgets
easier than ever
- C++ support
- Seven new widgets including: container, notebook and
combobox
- UIL support of 64-bit architectures and platform
independent UID files
- MWM support for virtual screen and workspace
management protocols
- Revised Style Guide: converges windows, CUA, CDE,
OSF/Motif styles
- OSF now offers new CD-ROM distribution for OSF/Motif
2.0.
Also available from OSF is a new release of the
OSF/Motif VTS that validates Motif 2.0 against the
latest Application Environment Specification. This
comprehensive release is the basis of the OSF/Motif
Certification and Trademark program as well as a
valuable aid to your quality assurance process.
Pricing for OSF/Motif 2.0 remains the same as Motif 1.2,
but offers additional cost-saving options including low
prices for single user systems and shipping applications
with Dynamically Linked Libraries (DLLs). Complete
technical and licensing information can be obtained by
contacting OSF Direct Channels at direct@osf.org or 617-
621-7300, or contact Darrell Crow at crow@osf.org.

OSF Pre-Structured Technology (PST)
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Common Desktop Environment/Motif PST
During 1994, OSF transitioned to a cooperative
development model for existing and new technologies.
The goal is to increase OSF's capacity for introducing
new technology implementations to the open systems
market. To this end, several sponsors have worked to
define the next release of the Common Desktop
Environment (CDE) and Motif. The draft proposal of the
requirements was presented to the OSF membership at the
SuperSig meeting and feedback is being filtered into the
proposal which is currently being readied for
presentation to the OSF Board of Directors. Terry
Landers is the Program Manager for the CDE/Motif Next
project, Martha Hester is the Quality Advocate and
Darrell Crow is the Business Area Manager. Questions
about this project can be sent via email to
crow@osf.org.
We can hardly wait to see what 1995 has in store for
Motif...and CDE.
