Meeting Minutes 8 Apr 93

daemon@ATHENA.MIT.EDU (Mark Rosenstein)
Thu Apr 22 15:12:37 1993

Date: Thu, 22 Apr 93 14:51:54 -0400
From: Mark Rosenstein <mar@MIT.EDU>
To: layered-athena@Athena.MIT.EDU

Status update: the design is just about done, will schedule the public
review shortly. The third party software policy is still undecided
and is turning into a problem as we may not be able to table that and
move forward with the implementation while another team looks at the
policy.

Documentation: besides the how to install Layered Athena document
(which should be very short), we will need to suggest an ammendment to
the Athena Rules of Use to cover private workstations running layered
athena. The Private Workstation document will need changes.

We should identify a lead customer who will be involved in early
testing and can give us the customer's viewpoint on some decisions.
Carla will talk to Jeff Solof to try to identify suitable people.

We may want an article in the I/S newsletter in a month or two about
Layered Athena to help get the word out.

There's still some confusion about what Layered Athena is. At least
for now, this has NO bearing on the public clusters. It only applies
to private workstations. Only if the first phase of the project is
successfull will we consider incorporating public workstations into
the scheme.

Consulting will want a machine to try putting Layered Athena on. They
will also need training about Layered Athena before we deploy it.

Who do users contact for help? This went into a lengthy discussion as
to whether consulting, the network help desk, or someone else would be
fielding calls about Layered Athena. Carla agreed to write up a
proposal for how I/S would handle help on Layered Athena.

There was a question as to what our team charter is. Basically, "to
guide the development and support structures through the full release
of Layered Athena on one platform, then to recommend next steps for
Layered Athena."

The next meeting will be in two weeks, on 22 Apr 93 at 10am in
E40-316.
