I've been struggling with this problem for some time now. I'm using
Kerberos IV, based on the Cygnus distribution. I'm using Solaris 2.4
x86, and I've heard of the problem on Sparc as well. (I assume you are
using Sparc.) I built telnet with no authentication or encryption
support and I still get the problem, so Kerberos is definitely not
involved.
My best guess at this point is a problem with ioctl. Somebody suggested
a signal problem too. It seems to be only the display, data is coming
in off the network and input to the telnet session works fine. Quitting
the telnet session brings me back to a working xterm, usually --
sometimes the character set gets garbled.
Strangely enough, I talked to the author of the program (dab@cray.com)
and he's never heard of the problem. He runs it on Solaris 2.4 and
hasn't seen anything like this.
I'm still looking into it, I'll let you know if I find out what's going on.
