I just went through the same thing only on a DEC Alpha. After compiling
and installing version 5 Kerberos (for the first time) I found out later
from Xyplex that they "apparently don't support version five for the
Alpha" and suggested I either 1) give them a sniffer trace between the
Xyplex and kerberos or 2) load version 4.
I got version 4 from Cygnus and it worked fine.
