Yes, I know.  MIT knows too.  Like I said, though, they do not have unlimited
resources, and they have to prioritize what they work on.  Making the response
time of the mailhubs when messages are sent to huge mailing lists is not one
of their highest priorities.

Sendmail 8 fixes this automatically (if "owner-list" exists, it is
automatically made the envelope from address of any message delivered to
"list").  When MIT upgrades to sendmail 8, this part of the problem, at least,
will be solved.

I've asked the MIT postmasters when they're going to do this, and their
response is, "When we have time."

In any case, intricacies of running large mailing lists belong in
comp.mail.list-admin.software or perhaps comp.mail.sendmail, not
comp.protocols.kerberos.  Please redirect followups appropriately.
