Negotiated additional equipment/work completed (costing $36K) to be
provided at NO CHARGE
Negotiated additional AMIS terminals (costing approx. $16K) to be provided
at NO CHARGE
Frame verification ongoing (NW12 nearly completed; 24 1/2 completed; E19
started)
New verification methods designed by 5E Ops Team identified to speed process
AM & CM3 installed and powered in E19
Additional A/C provided with creatively using the A/C from the modem pool
SM's and power cabinet installations ongoing
Conduits to roof for GPS Antennae installed
Testing of GPS signaling completed
Installation of GPS Antennae from 5E's to roofs completed
Priority telephone numbers/circuit lists being compiled
U-A to U-B card conversions in E19 ongoing (approximately 350 of 600
completed)
ICE9 database upgrade/reconciliation/updates ongoing
Preparing for adjunct equipment (e.g. voicemail, ACD, IVR, modem pool, etc)
conversion to new switch
Preparing to align support team for night of cutover
New blocks mounted onto frame in NW12
New code written in ICE 9 to handle architectural changes in the 5ESS-2000
and MDF's stenciled to match ICE 9 database.
Cable and Pair changes modified daily to match frame verification process
ICE 9 updated to reflect clean-up and reconciliation of work results
verification process

Next Month's Plans:
Finish Frame verification
Continue ICE9 database upgrade/reconciliation/updates
Install MDF blocks in 24 and E19
Install "S" clips for dual block work
Testing of analog in NW12 (board to board)
Install AMIS terminals in all switchrooms
Modifications made to voice mail
Continue U-A to U-B card conversions in E19
Plan for U-A to U-B card conversions in 24 and NW12
Continue compiling priority telephone numbers/circuit lists
Continue SM and power installations
Begin testing Bldg 24 analog
Begin integration between old classic switch database and new SM2K switch
database
Continue preparation for adjunct systems (e.g. voicemail ACD, IVR, modem
pool, etc) conversion to new switch
Turn on additional cabinets, (Miscellaneous bays, LTP, SM's, AIU's)

Issues:
Retirement package at Lucent taken by majority of our Lucent Team
Account
Layoffs affecting 1/3 of the installation team
Lost some Lucent installation staff at MIT to assist installation of 3 new
5ESS in New York at "Ground Zero"
Closely monitoring Air Conditioning in all three switch sites (especially E19)
Switch rooms becoming increasingly crowded with people/equipment, making
ongoing daily Telephone moves/adds/changes difficult to complete in normal
time frames (due to overlapping on the MDF and at the terminals)
5ESS Operations core team and additional resource team members working on
the project are becoming increasingly stressed trying to maintain day to
day service on the current switch at the level to which our customer base
has become accustomed, while installing the new 5ESS (a full time project
all by itself), and dealing with daily technical/administrative issues and
problems related to loss of MIT administrative staff/support
Continue to be instrumental in all areas of Telecom in the day-to-day stuff
and while also working multiple projects and/or tasks.
Key 5ESS Ops personnel are being tapped into for other emerging issues on
campus.
Double workload for the team is resulting in 60+ hour work-weeks with
limited time off
etc.

Team Dynamics:
The 5ESS core team and additional resources being utilized come from a
strong foundation and work well together; consequently, morale is OK right
now, although the increasing stress level is taking it's toll. The
strength of this team is held together by not only the pride they have in
the importance of the work they do but also out of respect and admiration
for their coworkers.

Key Learnings:
Expect the unexpected (7x24)
Make vendors feel responsible and push them to do better
Strategies move with the project
Develop a creative solution to deal with the unexpected on the fly.
People need recognition, respect and time-off
