Project Name: MIT Cable Television
Project Leader: Randy Winchester
Report Date: October 5, 2001
Accomplishments:
* September 1: The cut over to Falls Earth Station services and
locally provided Boston channels took place without a hitch. It was
discovered during the cut over that the AT&T Broadband optical receiver
that was disconnected had been broadcasting wide band noise. Removing the
AT&T receiver dropped the noise floor on our system by 6dB, improving the
carrier to noise ratio for our analog channels by 6dB as well. The new
Falls Earth Station service, digitalXtreme, is fully operational with 142
digital television channels and 45 digital music channels. All offerings
include MIT's 24 channel universal basic service.
* Set top receivers were distributed to all but one customer who had
signed up for service prior to and during September.
* Falls Earth Station was able to add some flexibility to the sign up
and billing by adding a pre-payment / debit account option for those
without access to credit cards.
* E19-741 Telecommunication Reception area was set up as a location for
former AT&T Broadband customers to drop off their old set top boxes.
* A revised analog channel lineup was produced that includes
ResearchChannel (which was added after the initial lineup was activated)
and takes advantage of the six character description field to improve the
local off air channel names (WFXT25 vs. WFXT).
* Pay-Per-View services were fully implemented through the web site.
* All service problems have been resolved quickly. There have been no
unusual problems.
Plans for October 2001:
* It's time to conclude this project. I will be taking the steps to
formally wrap up this project.
Issues:
* TiVo does not have our channel lineup and the remote control codes
necessary to control the Motorola DSR470 receiver. As a result, one
customer canceled service.
* There were some receiver authorization problems initially. This
problem was of short duration, was easily corrected and is not expected to
recur.
* Please note that this is a very short list of issues.
