Project Name: 5ESS Upgrade and Replacement
Project Leader: Louise T. Keohane
Report Date: August 31, 2001
URL: http://web.mit.edu/is/delivery/5ess/
Accomplishments prior to September 1, 2001:
=B7 Expansion of E19 and NW12 switchrooms were completed by=
facilities.
=B7 We=92ve received all hardware for the three switchrooms. Each=
piece=20
of hardware must be wired and installed and then cabled to each=20
other. The amount completed on this task is as follows:
=A7 E19: 75 % cabled
=A7 NW12: 80% cabled
=A7 Bldg. 24: 80% cabled
=B7 Brian Shannon did an excellent job of getting the fiber runs=20
between the 3 switchrooms in place and operational in a short period of=20
time. His efforts allowed the project to stay on time.
=B7 We installed a new battery plant in NW12. We had a few issues=
with=20
the bowing of the floor, but, this was resolved after the old batteries=20
were removed. The testing of the batteries occurred when MIT lost power=20
into NW12 and our 5ESS equipment switched over to the batteries and=20
telephone service was not interrupted.
=B7 Frame verification is going well. We have completed most of=20
NW12. This process is complex but it is necessary to ensure a successful=20
cutover. Each analog line is verified during the day as ISDN is verified=20
after hours to eliminate outages during normal business hours. All=20
anomalies are then traced and identified. All data is compared to the=20
current telephone database (e.g. ICE 9). Some changes may take 3 key=20
strokes while others require many alterations and therefore can actually=20
take days to complete the modifications. The web site for 3-down is=20
modified daily to publicize our possible outages at night to our ISDN=20
community.
=B7 During the frame verification process, we have identified every=20
circuit, alarm and emergency phone and replaced its equipment on the main=20
distribution frame with red connectors. This process will assist both the=
=20
installers and the repair technicians.
=B7 ICE 9 was dumped and provided to Lucent for their initial=20
preparation of the software installation of the new switch.
Accomplishments (continued)
=B7 Our project had a slight change of plans. We made a request of=20
Lucent to provide us with the latest and greatest Command Module (CM)=20
Product line. During negotiations Lucent told us that we could not use the=
=20
newest module (the CM3) on campus because we had analog trunks. In May we=
=20
discovered that this was not an issue. Lucent had the CM2 returned to=20
their factory and we received the CM3 in August.
=B7 We have successfully replaced over 200 older ISDN cards served=
from=20
the E19 switchroom. This entails that:
1. The Customer Service Representatives (CSR=92s) will have to write=20
service orders for those identified as the older ISDN cards in all three=20
switchrooms.
2. The switch technicians trace each order and prepare the frame to=20
accept the new cross wire to the new ISDN card (the actual disconnect and=20
re-connect takes place simultaneously with the work the outside techs=20
perform in the telephone closets).
3. Two outside technicians go to the telephone closets in specific=20
buildings identified by the service order and they remove the old ISDN=20
equipment and install the new 5ESS equipment.
4. Both the switch technicians and the field technicians perform=20
testing of each ISDN line.
5. The administrative assistant then updates the orders in ICE 9.
6. The CSR then closes the order.
7. Old ISDN equipment is shipped by Tina Sands to a company she=20
successfully persuaded to compensate us financial for each item, even=20
though there is no market for this type of equipment.
NOTE: ** The lack of vacant ISDN capacity at the NW12 & 24 switchrooms,=20
requires older ISDN change outs to occur the night of cutover.
=B7 We re-engineered the 5ESS layout to accommodate a consolidation of=
=20
trunks and equipment.
=B7 We placed the fiber bays for VDIST and Network Services within the=
=20
E19 switchroom.
=B7 With the extra work being done to ensure a successful cutover, we=
=20
remain on schedule and within budget.
=B7 Clean-up of ICE 9=92s system assignments is being performed. The=
=20
removal of old system assignments will assist all CSR=92s when writing=20
service orders. This will also have a positive effect on the inventory of=
=20
the MIT Cable and Pair assignments.
=B7 Code is being modified within ICE 9 to support the new equipment=
=20
and the changes in assignments. These changes will be completed on a=20
separate server. The existing server will remain as the CSR=92s will=20
continue to perform their day-to-day work. We will move the code when the=
=20
cutover occurs.
Goals after September 1st:
=B7 Facilities will run conduits from each switchroom to the roof=
where=20
we will then install the GPS antennae.
=B7 Install and test bits timing clock from all three locations.
=B7 We have just received the firmware to upgrade the translator that=
=20
provides integration from the 5ESS to the Voice Mail system. We will=20
install and test the firmware on a weekend to eliminate outages for the=20
community.
=B7 ACD integration and hardware modifications will begin.
=B7 Wire every phone (22,000 + lines) from the main distribution frame=
=20
to the new 5ESS.
=B7 Turn the new switch on and test inter-switch locations.
=B7 Begin building the 5ESS software (extensions, names, trunk groups,=
=20
routing, etc.)
=B7 Perform voice-overs for all the recorded announcements in the new=
=20
switch (this includes the ACD recorded announcements).
=B7 Test for integration with the existing voice mail, IVR & ACD=20
systems with the new 5ESS.
=B7 Develop a list of critical telephone lines for the night of=
cutover.
=B7 Develop a testing document for all three switch locations.
=B7 The frame verification and the ISDN card change outs will continue=
=20
forward.
=B7 Communicate with vendors providing trunkage during period of=20
testing and cutover.
=B7 Communicate to community via article, web notification, email, and=
=20
presentations around the 5ESS upgrade and replacement and possible dates=20
for cutover.
=B7 Turn-up and test each trunks & each telephone line.
=B7 Prepare for cutover
