The option I expect will be implemented most widely is a general robocancel
of all articles which come from their site. The real battle will be between
Pericle's programmers, who will try to insert their articles in as many places
as possible with as little pattern to their headers as possible, against the
programmers of the inevitable freelance mercenary usenet protectorate, who
will try to keep up. A lot of bandwidth, time, and money will be spent by
both sides. This will be the greatest usenet W.O.M.B.A.T. so far in history.
Note that Pericles hasn't planned on any SMTP-based advertising, and I don't
think it would be effective in any case since they would need a lot of hosts
with very fat pipes to actually reach a large enough market to make the effort
worthwhile. Or at least, if Pericles has planned this they havn't spoken of
it; what they keep speaking of is just posting their trash to every newsgroup
in existence.
The thing I've been pondering is: who provides their technical support? Most
of the people I've met who can write software to do Usenetty kinds of things
have a sense of ethics about what they do. Someone out there evidently does
not.
