Two other salient details:
The number of phantom holdings created does not seem to bear any
relationship to the number of 049 $c s on the record. i.e. when I had
a bib record with 2 049 $c s I got the same result as when the bib
record had only one 049 $c.
When I was doing the experiment merging authority records, sometimes
the spurious holdings showed up on the bib record *which had the
heading which was not being changed.* It's really hard to understand
when and why bib records get "reindexed."
