HOW TO USE BARTON, THE ONLINE CATALOG--ADVANCE VERSION 6/95
Barton includes records for materials acquired and cataloged by the
Libraries since 1963, many earlier works, and items on order. Barton
shows the location of an item and whether it is in the library,
charged out, or on reserve.
INTRODUCTORY TIPS
To select commands, use arrow keys or type directly at prompt.
The system is caseless and ignores punctuation.
Brief help messages appear on screen; for more help, highlight
command and press Enter.
To delete typed characters, press Ctrl-h if backspace key does not work.
If you see no menu or Option Bar, type terms or press Enter to escape.
Use a * to truncate at end or beginning (comput* for computer,
computing, etc.; *conductor for semiconductor, superconductor).
To move within a list of records or within a multi-page record, select
Backward or Forward from the Option Bar.
To move to a previous stage in your search, select Prior Screen from
the Option Bar.
To obtain records by line number, select #Line from the
Option Bar and type 1 or 1-4 or 1,3,7.
Note the various levels of search results: headings, titles,
brief or full records, individual copy information.
FIRST WORD SEARCHES
First Word searches look for the first word(s) entered and put you
into a browsable alphabetical list. Word order matters.
Author: Type last name first; for corporate or conference names,
a= use normal word order, e.g., National Science Foundation.
Title: Type the title or part of the title in normal word order.
t= You need not use "a," "an," or "the" if they begin the title.
Subject: Type a Library of Congress Subject Heading. Use Library
s= of Congress Subject Heading volumes in the reference area.
If you are unsure, use Subject Keyword sw= search.
All Indexes: Titles, authors, subjects, and series are mixed in one list.
all= A search for Wood yields items by and about Wood as an
author; items about the material wood; items with wood
starting the title.
Series: Type the title of the series or part of the title
se= in normal word order. Use the Modify Search option
to limit search to a particular volume.
Call number: Enter number or part of it.

KEYWORD SEARCHES
Keyword searches look for terms anywhere in the chosen field. Word
order does not matter.
Author: Albert Einstein; Massachusetts Inst*
aw=
Title: men mice; introduct* art
tw=
Subject: Type any word(s) that may be in the Library of Congress
sw= subject headings.
All Keywords: Find keyword(s) anywhere in the record: author, title,
w= subject, notes.
Series: Type words from the series title.
sew= Use Modify Search to limit search to a particular volume.
Notes: Search various notes fields, including contents, theses.
nw= Useful for finding plays, short stories, essays.
ADDITIONAL SEARCHES
These searches are available when you select Additional Searches from
the main menu.

ISSN/ISBN I= International Standard Serial/Book Numbers

TO SEARCH FOR THESES
Select Thesis Searching from Additional Search Screen. Use Notes nw=
search. Type "thesis" and all or some of the following: department,
year, title keyword(s), advisor. Combine with an Author Keyword aw=
search.
nw=thesis sloan and aw=baker
Retrieves Sloan School theses by author Baker as first,
middle, or last name.
nw=thesis biology henry 1990
Retrieves 1990 biology theses supervised by Henry as first,
middle, or last name.
TO SEARCH FOR CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS
Use the All Indexes w= search. Enter a few keywords, e.g.,
international conference superconductor*
TO MODIFY A SEARCH
Select Modify Search option from the Option Bar. To correct an error
or add terms to the initial search, select Edit Search. To limit the
number of search results, select Change Limits. You may limit by
publication date, edition, language, material type, publisher, or
serial volume. Information on the options appears as you move the
cursor to each item. The modification occurs only after you select
the line numbers you wish.
To arrange search results by author/title, title/author, or
publication date, select Sort from the Option Bar.
TO FIND RELATED WORKS
To find works related to a record, select Extend Search from the
Option Bar and type the appropriate line number to search on author,
title, or call number of that record.
BOOLEAN SEARCHES
Use the boolean operators--AND, OR, NOT--to combine search elements in
KEYWORD searches:
(aw=smith or aw=jones) and sw=physics
Retrieves items written by either Smith or Jones on physics.
w=york not w=new
Retrieves items containing the term "york" but not "new"
(eliminates items about new york).
