Here's a short summary of how to work on the MARC tables for each
format, using Eric's comparison report. Stephen, Eric and I sorta
figured this out last evening.
On Advance, at the Cataloging Menu, type in: cat.mm
(it's not one of the options) to get to the Cataloging Main
Menu.
Cataloging Main Menu
choose 2. BCM
Bibliographic Cataloging Menu
choose 1. BSM
Bibliographic Set-Up Menu
1. BTSD Tag & Subfield Descriptions
2. BTSE Tag & Subfield Edit Checks
BTSD is where all of the MARC tags are initially set up, regardless of
format. They're all there now, as input by Geac.
BTSE is where we'll be doing the actual work for each format, going
through field by field and making sure the Advance information matches
our old GLIS information, using Eric's report.
So, choose 2. BTSE [note: as a short cut, you can just enter BTSE
from the initial Cataloging Menu and get straight to it.]
When you do, you get this screen:
----------------------------------------------------
TAG & SUBFIELD EDIT CHECKS

2) Required? (Y/N) : N

Post characters to insert :
Valid Subfields :
--------------------------------------------------
At "format:" you enter the 2-letter code for the format you're working
in. (If you don't know that code, enter ??)
At "MARC tag:" enter the tag you want to work on. (Remember, enter
the 041 tag as "41"--in other words, for all tags, omit the initial
zero.)
From there, you can go through the tag subfield by subfield.
When you do this, there will already be some information there--that's
what was input by Geac. Then you make any necessary additions,
deletions, etc. based on Eric's report.
"subfields entered:" --these are the subfields defined for this tag,
for the specific format you've chosen. As soon as you make a change,
like add or delete a subfield, it'll show up here.
"valid subfields:" --this comes from the BTSD list of all subfields
valid for this tag, regardless of format.
QUESTION for the group: Will we need to go through Advance's BTSD tag
by tag and check to see that all valid values are there, or do we just
accept it and change it as we need to?
Field by field,
subfield by subfield,
Sam
