USD is currently halfway through a 2-year crossover between domain names --
from .acusd.edu to .sandiego.edu.  The year before we started the actual change
was spent analyzing how it would be accomplished.  It involved not just setting
up a bunch of aliases for servers, but also changing out some of our network --
we were running three and that had to change.  Once the planning was
accomplished, a website was set up explaining how to change email settings.
Technicians were sent in to do that for users in areas that were running their
own mail servers.  Then our president put a letter out to the community
explaining the change.  Most users have special signatures at the end of their
emails noting the change and asking recipients to make a change in their
address books.  Technicians have also tried to assist people with changing
their listserve subscriptions.  I'm sure we'll miss someone, but in general
people were so happy with the name change that they have put up with any minor
inconveniences.  If you like I can put you in touch with our CIO for further
