Our students get a temporary IP address that does not allow off-campus
access until they register their NIC with our on-line DHCP database.

Since 1999, we've required out students to purchase one of three PCs from
our contracted PC provider; we get the list of those MAC addresses in a
text file before the PCs make their way to campus, which we import directly
into the DHCP database, so they have valid IPs from the day they get here.

We have been considering giving students valid IPs when they get here for a
short time (say, 3 weeks), and at that time forcing them to agree to our
"Fair and Acceptable Computer Use Policy"; if they do not agree, their MAC
address is flagged in our database and they do not get a valid IP until
they agree.

Though we've wanted to do this for the past two years, we haven't been able
to do this because we did not have the tools to redirect people. But we
think we may be able to now. I am not actually involved in this, so I
can't tell you for sure if it will happen or not.

Hello,

I am from Rutgers University and we have approximately 10,000+ resnet
connections. We are using static IP addresses. I am anxious to switch to
DCHP and forced registration to make it easier on the Help Desk at the
beginning of the semesters.

There have been concerns about switching to DHCP because of the possibility
of students running their own DHCP servers, especially with Win XP. Can
anyone share if they have similar concerns and how you plan to handle it?
Also, feel free to list your experience with the pros and cons of DHCP vs.
static IPs.

Also, do you suggest forcing students to register their computer from day
one?

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks!
  Keri
