Hi All!
Last spring we (Tufts OnLine) began supplying limited support to our resedential students thru our RCC program. Basically if someone reported they had a
virus we'd send an RCC to clean up the mess, educate the student on updating and using virus protection software and get them on their way. That seemed
to work great..... for then....
Because this past fall we were hit pretty hard by SirCam, NIMDA and Code Red, our NOC began putting any machines they happen across that are infected
with virii into a blocked IP range. The only thing these students would see is a web page telling them they had to call our support desk to get help
before their connection would be enabled again. (this REALLY gets their attention) This was, of course in addition to helping any students who happened
to call for help on their own. We staff a student help area during business hours where any students with laptops can bring their machine and have it
fixed on the spot.
So much for helping them after the fact.... right now we're working on a campus agreement for virus software, this will be distributed to all students via
our installer cd and also made available on our website. Once this is in effect we will be looking more closely at the virus related problems we service
to set more of an actual policy regarding help with virus infections. If there is anyone out there currently distributing virus software I'd love it if
you could share your policy for the kids that choose to either not use or not update the software when it comes to infections. (Do you charge them after
an initial call... do you send them elswhere? Force them to use the software?).... Gee.... wouldn't this make a great topic for a presentation at the
conference in June? (Sorry.... I'm on the program committee and couldn't resist the shameless plug for submissions!)
Best regards!
