Wellesley College has a site license which allows students to install
McAfee VirusScan and Virex on their personal computers free of charge. We
do not push updates. VirusScan users can download SuperDATs manually from
weekly electronic conference postings (we use FirstClass for mail and
conferencing, in case anyone's familiar with it), or use AutoUpgrade.
Virex users must download updates manually, either from electronic
conference postings or from the web (local-only access).
We do not require students to install our anti-virus software, but our
connection documentation tells them how to install and strongly recommends
that they do. If a student (or faculty or staff member) is found to be
spreading viruses across the network, we will deactivate her network
connection until the problem is solved. Our RCCs (called "DormNet
Consultants," or "DNCs") will assist students in removing viruses from
their computers, usually with a CD we've created which will boot the
computer and run scanpm.
