Lisa,
At UNH we do provide students with free virus protection software, as well
as updates. We currently have a site license with Network Associates to use
their product "McAfee Virus Protection".
This is the third year we've provided such protection, but until recently we
haven't given much thought to how many actually make use of it.
This year we have had an exceptionally high number of infected machines, and
are now in a quandary about how to get faculty, staff, and students to be
more responsible about protecting their machines.
Being a public institution, we find our selves standing at the edge of a
line in the sand, with a strong desire to jump over.
On one side we have the passive approach. (Currently in use)
We've provided free protection, shown them how to access it, shown them how
to use it, and cleaned their machines free of charged when they neglected to
do so. Using this model tends to keep faculty, staff, and students happy
and feeling non-violated, but it in turn puts an un-necessary burden on the
support staff.
On the other side we have the aggressive approach. (Currently "not"
acceptable)
We have the necessary tools in place to force all faculty, staff, and
students connected to the UNH network to run the virus protection software
that we have provided for them, or loose their connection. Simply by
comparing the database from the virus protection registration site to the
network registration database, we would have an accurate list of who's
protected and who's not. We'd then give them notice of our intent to
terminate their connection unless they make use of the protection we've
provided.
Unfortunately, no matter how much time this would save the support staff, it
still would pale in comparison to the backlash from those we're trying to
protect in the first place.
If any public institutions have found a successful method for doing this
without experiencing the dreaded backlash, please post it or drop me a note
off line.
Best of Luck,
-mike
