I would like to introduce myself. I am the lead tech assist at the
University of Arizona. Currently we are researching ways of off-setting the
cost of on site tech student tech support. Right now we do not charge
students anything for sending a tech out to look at their machine. Some
ideas thrown around were to charge say $10 if the answer was in the booklet
they received during move-in (ie plugging into the wrong port, using a
telephone cable, not registering their computer, not having a nic card
install at all), failing to show to an appointment and fixing the problem
before the tech arrives and failing to notify us. Basically anything that is
clearly presented to them and doesn't require any tech skills to perform.
Reinstalling tcp/ip and legitimate calls would not be charged. Charging to
re-enable a port for conduct violations was also brought up. If anyone has
any current fee structures or are considering something similar, we would
love to hear your ideas. I apologize in advance if this topic has been
discussed, I am new to the list.
