Hello All,
Here at Binghamton U, our ResCons have written a simple
Java program, BU-RPM (get it?), that downloads a file or web page,
measures the time that it takes and writes a record to a text file.
It runs with low overhead on most any old machine in their room.
They email me this file daily from some of the subnets in the
Residence Halls. I toss the numbers into a spreadsheet and
make a cumulative line plot of kiloBITS per second -vs- date/time.
Yes, I know it's subject to ALL the variables and vagaries of the machine,
ResNet, internet and web but it gives us an actual end-user perspective
on relative performance. They've added a GUI to make it easier to
configure URL and time between tests. Each line of the text file has
building, room, date/time, download speed (file size/download time).
They all use the same URL so we can compare oranges to oranges.
Our Systems and Network folks here seem to think the charts are helpful.
We also use MRTG and Cricket which give good pictures at a different scales
and at different points on the net but not from the endpoint.
If they get the code cleaned up, you may see this simple tool before long.
Stay tuned for details....about the
Binghamton University ResNet Performance Monitor (BU-RPM) :--)
