At SUNY Oneonta, we don't go inside of new computers under warranty.
Otherwise, I train my guys to know how to test for certain types of
software and hardware failure. We don't repair any broken hardware, but
we will install new audio/video/network/printer/scanner hardware and
software. Our techs are also trained to search for and download the
appropriate drivers, even for obscure motherboards. If the fix requires
a registry or BIOS hack (as documented in a major vendor support site
only), then they may do so under supervision.

A+ certified students are allowed to open cases to check hardware. We
will check drives (master/slave and cabling) and network cards. Pretty
much we'll make sure things are plugged in properly and maybe swap out
their card with a spare if we have one floating around.
We won't install any hardware. If students want a new drive installed or
anything like that we will refer them to a local shop.
