Robin,
MSU's ResNet is in its 4th year. We do everything. We open cases and
install cards, troubleshoot hardware/software/OS problems and have been
known to even install CD-RWs and hard drives. We do not charge for this
service and users must sign a "Release and Indemnity" form which basically
says that if we break it, we're sorry but not responsible for replacement.
We haven't had anything bad happen, except we broke a Monorail computer
trying to install a regular NIC in the thing. The user was adamant about us
trying and understood the risks involved. My feeling is that if we do
actually break something by accident or by sheer carelessness, we will
replace what we break despite the release and indemnity form. I think that
it gives my staff some practical experience and it keeps them interested in
what they are doing. And the users seem to love the service...after all,
it's free!

Subject: Student Techs & Hardware Repair

Any information you can share about what types of computer hardware repair
your student techs do would be greatly appreciated. For example, are they
limited to certain types of hardware repair or are they permitted to do all
types of hardware
repair/installations?

Currently, our IT student techs handle primarily software related issues and
can install network cards. All other repair issues are referred to our IT
Repair department, which is staffed by professional employees.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.
