Matt,
Back in the 50% of students with computer days, students were using our
clusters at a rate of 94% of the students at least once/week. Now, with 94%
of our students with computers AND network connections - we are still seeing
>70% using the cluster at least once/week. About four years ago, we went
specifically to quality vs quantity - per the students input. Now are
clusters have 8 machines when they used to have 12. We are also trying to
carve collaborative workspaces out of the clusters by adding white boards,
scanners and workspace. Usually this is done by taking the back 1/2 of the
cluster. Not sure how this is working out though. We are watching it
though. In our case, we believe that students will continue to support the
clusters for the reasons you mentioned, plus some very basic sociological
ones. The need to get out of their room and see other faces. Our clusters
have been social spaces as well as technology spaces, per our intent from
day one.
Good Luck!
Matt
