Michael,

We had a similar situation on a Dell laptop running Win 2k with an SMC
card.  Everything looked fine (link light, drivers, hardware, etc)
except the OS kept showing media disconnected.

The fix was to upgrade the bios for the laptop.  After we did that, the
media disconnected was fixed.

It may be worth a try before you go through a reload or return.
