I would second Marc's comments. Our IT management decided that we would tr=
y a test case in one large dorm at the beginning of school year. We carefu=
lly surveyed and installed additional AP's to get to a reasonable user/radi=
o ratio (10-12 per AP.) and turned down the wired side. Let's just say th=
at I'm glad that wired access was still available...
Streaming audio, video and gaming, plus all the regular browsing has made t=
he wireless in that dorm problematic. Yes, we could block some of these se=
rvices to make it better on the wireless, but adding restrictions to everyd=
ay common usage seems to be going backwards.
Leaving the gaming and specific high bandwidth wired devices on the wired n=
etwork is a much preferred solution for us.
In my humble opinion, knowing what I do of electronics and radio; wireless =
will never be faster than a wired (copper or fiber) solution. There is sim=
ply too much contention involved to use strictly wireless. Again; my opini=
on.
(one of these days, someone will probably figure out that all these high GH=
z radios in close proximity to student's beds tends to cook brain tissue, c=
auses tumors, or health issues; the more we add, the worse it will become. =
Then what will we do?!?! I always carry a candy bar in my pocket when work=
ing in the dorms!)

Greetings,
I just wanted to weigh-in on this idea. I know that a lot of folks see=
m to be of the impression that 'wireless is all we need', but I regularly h=
ave to connect physically to get reasonable latency and throughput. From a =
bandwidth perspective, switching to wireless-only is basically the same as =
replacing switches with half-duplex hubs.
Sure, wireless is convenient, and it's great for casual email/browsing=
/remote access users (including, unfortunately, the managers who tend to ma=
ke these decisions). Those of us who need to move chunks of data around or =
who rely on low-latency responsiveness find themselves marginalized in wire=
less-only settings. For instance: RDP, SSH, and X11 over even moderately bu=
sy wireless connections are often barely usable, and waiting an hour for a =
600MB Debian ISO seems very... 1997.
