We use the Stanley/BEST WiQ system at some of our campus residence halls. This is a wireless reader/lock installed in individual room doors.
Wireless APs/controllers talk to the locks and back to the server. Locks are battery operated. The wireless network is separate from the standard 802.11 wireless used for computing (totally separate APs).
We require a card swipe and a PIN at the door, so a misplaced card will not work solo--you also need to know the PIN. The doors can be programmed to work with PIN only as well.
The access rights are integrated with the online doors that are part of the Stanley/Lenel BASIS card access system.
I know that Assa Abloy Sargent also has a similar solution, but I do not have any experience with it.

Subject: offline ID card access systems
Hi all,
We use a product from Stanley called BEST for door access. The system is offline meaning the locks on the doors are not wired to our network and we only use it on one dorm (because frankly, it is a real pain). Any suggestions out there for another offline (guest) replacement application OR is there an easy way to hook these doors up to the network since we do have the S2 online system for other areas of campus.
Back about 5-6 years ago we were told it would cost $3,000 - $5,000 per door to wire them to the network.... has anything changed since then?
Thanks :-)
