1.) Customize the Administrator account, use SysPrep. It'll copy the
administrator profile customizations to the Default User profile.
2.) You can mount the default user profile for doing minor updates to the
Default User profile by doing this:
a.) Launch regedit.exe as an administrator
b.) Highlight "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE".
c.) At the top menu bar, click on "File" | "Load Hive".
d.) Type in:
C:\users\Default\ntuser.dat
(this is the user profile for the default user)
e.) When prompted for "Key Name:", you can use whatever you want, then
press "OK". I would recommend:
Default_User
f.) You should now see under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE a new key called
"Default_User" (or whatever you named it in the previous step). This
subkey and its contents are the template for new user profiles.
g.) When a new user profile is created, that user's HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive
in the registry is basically a copy of this subkey. So, make the changes
in "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Default_User".
h.) Once you have finished, highlight "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Default_User".
At the top menu bar, click on "File" | "Unload Hive". This is important -
if you do not do this step, then the changes you made in the previous step
are not saved!
3.) I have also written scripts to add batches of registry keys and values
to the Default User profile after an image has been created. Go to a
command prompt, and type:
reg.exe
for syntax and explanation of what you can do.
You can use that Windows tool in your scripts/batch files to automate the
loading, writing, and unloading of user profiles, copies of the registry
from another computer, user profiles, etc. In fact, this is the technique
I use for my open source tool for editing the local Windows registry when
booting from a Bart's PE CD/DVD. http://regeditpe.sourceforge.net/ I have
not touched that project for years, but it did the trick and forced me to
dig deeper into the Windows registry than I had in the past.
