Hi Caroline,
We have 4,000 students in residence and that's all we provide support to, as we have our own IT unit in University Residences.
We do not have a help desk or any walk-in service at all.
We have only four (4) part-time Consultants (student employees who work a maximum 19 hours per week, and provide tech support via phone, email, and room visits) who work throughout the academic year.
But, we recruit and hire 9-12 temp students to help us for a few weeks starting Fall move-in. We call this an internship, they are paid to move in early for 2 and a half days of intensive training, and then they help us with the big start of term push.
We also have a student server admin and a higher end student Consultant who work year round, and who provide support from our office during the big Fall rush.
The beauty of the internship is that this group becomes our recruitment pool for filling Consultant positions when they open up, we've already screened them when they were hired for the internship, and then we got to see them in action.
Please let me know if you have any questions, as I'd be happy to be a resource.

>> Hi Folks!
>>
>> We are thinking of changing our staffing levels to support our students. We have a student population of 5300 with a significant proportion of Macintoshes. We are using XpressConnect and Aruba.
>>
>> We have students that support students and this is the group we are focusing on right now.
>>
>> Currently each residence has a student staff that supports the residents in the house. The smallest residence has @130 students with the largest having @850 and the campus is easily walkable.
>>
>> We are thinking of consolidating staff and not having student staff in each building but how far that consolidation goes we aren't yet sure.
>>
>> So how do you estimate how much staff you need? What is your formula? Is it hard and fast or does it depend on time of year or some other factor?
>>
>> Thanks!
