Hi Caroline,

We moved away from staff in the halls 5 or 6 years ago for our 3200
students. Instead we have a tech desk in the library, staffed by 2-3
students and backed up by 2-3 full time staff (who have other
responsibilities) from about 8am - 11pm during the week and 10-10 on
weekends.

The advantage to a central location is that we're in a place where
students, staff, faculty, retirees, alums, etc., can show up and get
assistance, although we still do deployments to the halls for our IP
TV connections and other networking issues. Since virtually everyone
has a laptop, it's easy to say 'just bring your computer to the desk -
we're open' rather than having students in the halls trying to track
down other students in the halls for help.

I'd be happy to talk with your about how much we budget over the
course of the year for this level of service if you'd like.
