We use Spiceworks primarily as a ticketing solution, and have delved
into the inventory tracking system, as well.  The ticketing solution
does do its job and includes many options that you can customize for
your specific operation.  There is a user portal so individuals can
track their own tickets, although they also receive any updates you wish
them to see via e-mail. =20

I would recommend using Spiceworks locally, as we occasionally have some
issues with our connection from another campus.  The only major issue we
had was using the system with tens of thousands of tickets.  We
initially imported our older ticketing system's data into Spiceworks,
roughly 40,000 tickets, and it bogged down Spiceworks significantly.  We
had to archive the tickets with an in-house system, just in case we
needed to return to them for some reason, in the future.

I'm not overly fond of the inventory tracking system, although we do use
it.  I would recommend scheduling the scans during non-working hours,
however you will lose people who turn off their systems, if they do.
Also, check with some place that has a larger IT department, at most we
only have ten to twelve concurrent users.

We use Spiceworks here to monitor our server subnet.  It's not the best
product out there, but it is free.  I think considering this, it does a
decent job.  Getting e-mail alerts for low drive space is a plus.  Right
now I'm not sure how to include another person to get the low drive
space alerts.  Both myself and the other person are checked to receive
the alerts, but right now they are just delivering to me.

I have yet to dive into what else this can do for us.  Right now, we're
just using it as a simple "network health" tool.  I just upgraded to the
most recent version earlier this week.

Anyone using Zendesk for the Helpdesk ticketing software? I just came
across it tonight (yes, on a Sunday) through a Facebook ad (that's why I
came across it on a Sunday night). At brief glance, it looks pretty
good. I'm curious to hear what others who might be using it think and
can tell me about what makes it good and, especially, what makes it bad.
