Hi everyone, thanks for all the responses, the info is very helpful. 
Just as a side note, along with looking at Microsoft Live@edu and Google 
we are also looking at these in-house products.

Zimbra (we use VMware now)
Oracle's Collaboration Suite
Sogo

or... sticking with our current mail server product (CommuniGate Pro) 
and start using the Calendaring side of it too (right now we use Meeting 
Maker).

If anyone has thoughts on the above products feel free to chime in :-)
