I have a mild word of warning about Labstats. Kenyon has been using
Labstats for a few years now (3, I think). Version 4 was simple and did
everything we needed. In the 2+ years we used it, we upgraded the client a
couple of times. It did have some problems, but mostly it was stable.
Since we had a really good experience with 4, we decided to move to version
5 when it came out. We either should have waited or we did something
incorrect or something...
Over the summer we moved to a new server so we could start using Version 5.
We installed on all the public machines and waited for school to start.
And my problems started. We have had 4 different clients, I can't seem to
get the mac client to work and what is worse, the Labstats client has been
implicated in a problem that has haunted me: Machines that set powered on
but not logged in for several days (such as over a weekend) will NOT map net
drivers nor will Internet work UNLESS the computer is restarted. Of course,
users find this AFTER they have written their paper! We are 99% sure
Labstats client is the culprit, since the problem did not occur on a machine
for 10 days then I installed Labstats. After 5 days, the machine had the
exact symptoms. Stopping Labstats client, log out, log back on and network
drives suddenly were present. We are currently in the process of disabling
the client on our 300+ Windows 7 and Windows XP clients.
I haven't given up on Labstats. I really like the company and I really like
things we could do with Labstats 4. I will be contacting the company on
Monday to see if we can come up with a plan of attack to make Labstats 5
work at Kenyon.
