Wow, sounds a lot like some of the issues I have to go through. I also have=
a locked pay scale controlled by another department, and we have very few =
technical majors on campus (small, catholic, liberal arts college). Here ar=
e the answers to the questions=85

1. IT has anywhere from 60-70 student employees serving as lab monitors, he=
lpdesk consultants, and computer technicians.

2. We have about 3800 undergraduate students and another 1000 students divi=
ded between graduate and continuing education.

3. I give my students annual raises. The standard for me is a 25 cent raise=
. If they're outstanding, they get more. If they're not up to par, they get=
less. They can get promoted to another position if they would like and hav=
e the skills necessary. The positions are written in order of pay grade. Th=
e increase in pay is really the only incentive to work in a different posit=
ion. Most of mine prefer to stay in their current positions because that's =
what they're good at and enjoy. I mean, there's the incentive of a resume b=
uilder and learning new skills, but for most of my students, that won't nec=
essarily help them.

4. Lab monitors start at $7.40 (RI minimum wage), helpdesk consultants star=
t at $7.75, and technicians start at $8.00. I cannot pay my students more t=
han $9.00 per hour though I am hoping to change that as a range of $1.60 is=
useless for using pay as a means to get students to want to work harder.

5. The Financial Aid office sets our salary rules. They are also pretty tou=
gh to get to change it, even though we have gone to them many times. This p=
ay scale is the same for all students on campus, though I believe mine shou=
ld be paid more as without students here, the Helpdesk would not be very he=
lpful (we only have 2 full time employees in it=85 me during the workday an=
d another who works nights/weekends).

6. The biggest perk of working for me is getting to spend time with me. Bec=
ause I'm awesome. :) Seriously though=85 it's a great place to work, be par=
t of the college community, help the college community, make a difference i=
n the college community, and learn some seriously valuable skills that will=
help you throughout your life (customer service skills are important in AN=
Y position, and I'm big on customer service).

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Jim

Subject: [RESNET-L] Student Technology Staffing

Apologize in advance for any cross postings=85..the following is sent on be=
half of one of my staff who is looking for information from other instituti=
ons regarding IT student Staffing. Any information that you can provide us=
regarding your student programs would be greatly appreciated=85

Thanks in advance=85

Bill Thieke

Hello,
I am trying to conduct an informal survey about students that work for Info=
rmation Technology in higher education institutions. We have been trying to=
restructure our program for a number of years. We have around 25 students =
that provide classroom support and staff the service desk serving faculty, =
staff, and students. Currently, our program provides almost no room for ad=
vancement; all students enter at the same level (minimum wage) and stay at =
the same level throughout their time with us. We have the added barrier of =
not being able to pay our student workers at a higher rate than other work-=
study positions on campus. Essentially our students are required to perfor=
m more advanced tasks and require significantly more training than most oth=
er positions on campus but they make the same amount of money as the person=
checking ID cards at the gym. We are trying to collect information from ot=
her institutions in order to build a proposal for restructuring our program=
and potentially presenting our case to the student wage committee.

The information that we are interested in gathering would be:

=B7 How many student workers Information Technology at your institu=
tion employs?

=B7 What is the size of your school?

=B7 What incentives exist for your student workers in terms of prom=
otions?

=B7 What is the salary structure for your student employees?

=B7 If there is a standard campus salary at your institution? If th=
ere is, what is it?

=B7 What other benefits and perks do your students receive by worki=
ng with you?
We would really appreciate any information that you are willing to provide =
us with. Our students have great potential, but they as well as we are left=
frustrated by our inability to provide them with continuing incentives to =
grow as employees. A majority of our students do not major in technical are=
as so many of them will not continue in the technology field. We feel as th=
ough we need to provide some incentive to keep them interested in working f=
or us.
Thank you,
