This week is dedicated to planes, trains, and automobiles!
We=92re about a month away from ResNet=92s Student Technology Conference! =
As
your trip to the Elm City becomes less of an abstraction, we=92d like to
outline some ground transportation options. We=92ve tried to include the
cheapest option as well as the easiest option, but there are definitely
other options as well.
If you have any further questions on ground transportation, please contact
us at host@resnetsymposium.org or post something in the 2011 Student
Technology Conference forums<http://resnetsymposium.org/resnet2011/bbpress/=
>.
We also encourage you to post there if you are planning on driving from an
airport and are willing to carpool.
In addition, if you=92re still looking for the cheapest airfare, you can lo=
ok
into flights to Providence Airport (PVD). From PVD, you can take the RIPTA
Bus to Providence Train Station, which then connects to Amtrak. Or, if
you=92re driving, it=92s about 1 hour and 45 minutes by car and an easy tra=
vel
along I-95.
Shuttle Service
Shuttle service to/from JFK, LGA, BDL, and EWR is available through Connect=
icut
Limousine <http://www.ctlimo.com/>. We have been assured by CT Limo that
conference attendees can use the Yale discount when booking. You will need
to click on =93Yale=94 on the homepage banner and select Phelps Gate as you=
r
destination.
Union Station (Metro-North and Amtrak)
The Yale Shuttle <http://www.yale.edu/transportationoptions/shuttle/>=92s r=
ed
line stops at Union Station between 7:30am and 6pm on weekdays. The
College and Wall stop is on the same block as Silliman College.
If you=92re scheduled to arrive outside of the shuttle=92s hours, taxis are
available outside Union Station for around $10.
JFK/LGA
The NY Airport Service <http://www.nyairportservice.com/> provides
transportation to and from Grand Central Terminal, JFK, and LGA. Round-tri=
p
service between JFK/Grand Central is $27; LGA/Grand Central is $21.
Once at Grand Central, the easiest way to get to New Haven is by Metro-Nort=
h
Railroad <http://www.mta.info/mnr/> to Union Station. Fares vary by
Peak/Off-Peak hours.
If you=92re adventurous, you can navigate the New York subway to Grand
Central. From JFK, you can take the
AirTrain<http://www.mta.info/mta/airtrain.htm>to Jamaica Station, the
E train to Lexington Av/53 St., and the 6 train to
Grand Central =96 42 St. Total fare for AirTrain and subway is $7.25.
From LGA, you can take the M60 bus to Hoyt Av/31 St., the Q train to
Lexington Av/59 St., and the 4 train to Grand Central =96 42 St. Total far=
e
for bus and subway is $4.50.
EWR
Amtrak <http://amtrak.com/> provides train service from EWR to New Haven=92=
s
Union Station. If purchased soon, a round-trip ticket is as low as $64.
HVN
New Haven does have its own small airport serviced by US Airways. Taxi
service, provided by Metro Taxi <http://www.metrotaxict.com/index.htm>, is
around $12 to downtown New Haven.
You can also take the local bus, CT Transit <http://www.cttransit.com/>, to
downtown New Haven. The G line will take you to Chapel and Church, a
5-minute walk from Silliman College. Bus fare is $1.25.
Did you know=85?
New Haven received the nickname =93The Elm City=94 after having the first p=
ublic
tree-planting program in America.
The New Haven Green, the center square of the colony=92s Nine Square Plan, =
was
used as the main burial grounds for residents from 1638 to 1821.
